- What it is. A free Chrome add-on from AdAvoid Ltd, rebuilt on Manifest V3, with about two million users.
- Score and basis. We give it 4 out of 5. That rests on one test day across CRA, the CRA Sign-In Partner handoff, eTaxBC, a tax portal, a bank sign-in with 2FA, a bank OAuth handoff and a Stripe test form. Nothing broke.
- Who it’s for, and the price. Solo bookkeepers and small teams suit it best. Chrome is free, while paid apps run $39.99 for year one, then $59.99, or $99.99 once for life.
- Skip it if. You need it kept away from your bank tabs, or you must lock settings on a dozen staff laptops.
Is AdBlocker Ultimate Worth It for Your Firm? Quick Verdict
Score: 4 out of 5.
Fit is the headline here, and it is close to spotless. Every tax and bank page we opened worked normally with AdBlocker Ultimate running. No login stalled, and nothing came back blank. Moreover, both auth handoffs finished, while the card form took input as usual. Price does real work in that score as well. Because the Chrome build is free, your firm risks time rather than budget. As a result, the bar it has to clear sits lower than a paid tool’s.
Control is the weak spot. Unfortunately, You cannot fence it off from the sites your firm cares about, since Chrome’s site setting does not do what its label implies. For a solo bookkeeper that hardly matters. For a firm of twelve, however, it matters a great deal.
Who it’s for: solo bookkeepers and small teams who want fewer bad ads without a new bill.
Who it’s not for: firms that need per-site control, or locked setup across staff laptops.
Most ad blockers sell you a score. AdBlocker Ultimate sells you quiet instead, and for a small practice that is the better pitch. Your staff do not care how many trackers died. Instead they care whether the CRA page loads on the first try. So we tested the dull thing. We put it in front of tax portals, a bank, two auth handoffs and a card form. After all, that is where a blocker costs your firm money, so you can see current pricing once the results below make sense.
What Is AdBlocker Ultimate?
AdBlocker Ultimate is a Chrome add-on from AdAvoid Ltd. It blocks ads and trackers, so pages load lighter. Moreover, it runs no “acceptable ads” scheme, which means nobody pays to get through. The Chrome build sits at 4.4.0, and it reports about two million users. It is free to install. In addition, the firm sells paid apps for desktop and phone.
Still, one detail matters more than any feature. Chrome now demands Manifest V3, so rules ship inside the add-on instead of loading on the fly. Because of that, the vendor’s help centre warns of “a delay of 1–5 days before new filtering rules reach you on Chrome or Edge.” For your firm, that lag is not really an ad problem. Instead it is a malvertising problem, and that is the honest reason to care about it.
Can You Limit AdBlocker Ultimate to Certain Sites?
Not in the way you would expect. In fact, this was our most useful find of the day. Chrome gives every add-on three modes: all sites, specific sites, or on click. So we set AdBlocker Ultimate to one site only. Then we loaded a different news site, because that is the real test. Ads were still blocked there.
That is not a bug. Chrome’s own declarativeNetRequest docs say the permission “provides implicit access to allow, allowAllRequests and block rules.” Redirects and header changes do need host rights. Plain blocking, however, needs nothing of the sort.
If your firm’s policy assumes “on specific sites” scopes an ad blocker away from your ledger or your bank, that assumption needs rewriting. It restrains cosmetic hiding and scripts only.
So the read for your firm is blunt. Chrome’s site setting cannot fence an MV3 blocker off from your bank or your ledger. It curbs cosmetic hiding and scripts, yet blocking carries on all the same. Most reviews skip this test, since most reviews are not written for people with a compliance reviewer to answer to. Therefore, if your policy treats “on specific sites” as a wall, rewrite it.
Does AdBlocker Ultimate Break Tax Portals or Banking Sites?
This test decides whether AdBlocker Ultimate belongs on your staff laptops. We browsed read-only throughout, so no client data and no live filings were involved.
| Flow tested | Result |
|---|---|
| CRA sign-in and statement view | Worked as normal |
| CRA Sign-In Partner handoff | Completed as normal |
| eTaxBC login and inner page | Worked as normal |
| Tax portal login and inner page | Worked as normal |
| Bank sign-in, dashboard and 2FA widget | Worked as normal |
| Bank OAuth handoff | Popup opened and finished |
| Stripe test card form | Rendered and took input |
Nothing broke anywhere in that list. For a tool class known for eating login widgets, that is a real result, so it deserves saying plainly. The Sign-In Partner handoff matters most of all, since it throws you out to a bank’s own auth page and back again. It completed as normal. Even so, this was one test day from one location, so read it as a strong signal rather than a guarantee.
How Well Does AdBlocker Ultimate Block Ads?
We are not printing a blocking number for AdBlocker Ultimate. Still, the reason matters more than the number would. Our blocking run was tainted, because a custom rule list sat on the test profile. The “blocker off” baseline also scored far higher than a clean profile should. Two public testers then split by more than fifty points.
Any one of those would sink the result. So our score rests on fit and control instead, since we did measure both cleanly. Blocking strength therefore stays unscored for now. We will re-run it on a fresh profile, with no custom lists and three trials per tester. In short, we would rather print a gap than a number that cannot survive a reply.
How Easy Is AdBlocker Ultimate to Use Day to Day?
Recovery is what counts here, since staff who hit a broken page at 4pm need a fix in seconds. One news site did push back during testing, because it demanded we unblock the whole domain. The fix took three clicks: the icon, then the add-on, then “disable on this site.” Moreover, that entry survived a Chrome restart.
The limit sits underneath. That toggle is whole-domain only, so you cannot unblock one bank subdomain and leave the rest blocked. Finer control does exist, yet it means writing filter rules by hand. We tested that route as well. For example, a path-scoped rule for one news section worked exactly as written, and a rule for one Reddit board did the same. Even so, hand-written rules are not a fair ask for most staff. Settings export and import both worked. Moreover, the file carried into a second fresh profile. In practice that is the closest thing here to a firm-wide setup story.
Does AdBlocker Ultimate Have a Free Plan or Trial?
Yes, and the free plan is the one your firm will actually use. The Chrome build of AdBlocker Ultimate costs nothing, because it runs no ad allowlist and needs no account. Paid licences cover the desktop and phone apps instead. Those plans carry a 30-day money-back promise, per the vendor’s pricing page, so that promise works as the trial. Incognito access is worth a note as well. You must switch it on by hand, though the option is certainly there. See what the paid tiers add.
How Much Does AdBlocker Ultimate Cost?
| Plan | Price | Renews at | Devices | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome add-on | Free | — | Unlimited | No account needed |
| Yearly | $39.99 | $59.99 / year | 3–10 | 30-day money-back promise |
| Lifetime | $99.99 once | — | 3–10 | One-time payment |
Prices come from the AdBlocker Ultimate pricing page, and they leave out VAT. Similarly, there is no business, team or volume tier. Above ten devices the vendor tells you to email support, so a growing firm has no published way to buy at scale.
Rollout has the same shape. Chrome’s ExtensionInstallForcelist policy can push the add-on out and stop staff removing it, yet it covers install only. Settings need a second policy, and AdAvoid ships no schema for one. As a result, twelve laptops means a forced install plus manual setup on each. Therefore you should check the current plans before you commit a team to it.
AdBlocker Ultimate vs uBlock Origin: What Changed After Manifest V2?
This match-up is now mostly history, and that is exactly why your firm is reading it. Chrome has finished pulling Manifest V2, so uBlock Origin no longer runs there. As a result, you are picking among MV3 blockers whether you meant to or not. The uBlock team do ship uBO Lite for MV3. However, they call it “a pared-down version of uBO with a best effort at converting filter lists.”
| Question | AdBlocker Ultimate | uBlock Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on Chrome today | Yes | No |
| Manifest version | V3 | V2 |
| Rule update speed | 1–5 day lag, per vendor | Not applicable |
| Acceptable-ads allowlist | None | None |
| Policy schema for settings | None | None |
If your staff sit on Firefox, the math changes, since uBlock Origin still runs there. On Chrome, AdBlocker Ultimate competes with other MV3 blockers. By contrast, it no longer competes with the tool your IT contact probably still names.
What Are the Pros and Cons of AdBlocker Ultimate?
Pros
- Every tax, gov and bank flow we tried worked as normal
- No acceptable-ads scheme, so nobody pays to get through
- Free on Chrome, with no account needed
- Breakage recovery takes three clicks and survives a restart
- Settings export and import carry between profiles
- Usage data can be switched off in settings
Cons
- Chrome’s site setting cannot fence it off from your bank
- Unblocking is whole-domain only unless you write rules
- Rules lag 1–5 days on Chrome, per the vendor
- No business, team or volume tier
- No policy schema for locked staff setup
- Store page says no data collected, yet the policy says otherwise
That last con needs care, rather than outrage. The Chrome Web Store panel says the maker “will not collect or use your data.” Meanwhile AdAvoid’s privacy policy says it collects “a very limited amount of anonymous User Interface usage information.” Both lines can be defended on their own. Still, if your firm runs vendor checks, that is the one to raise. Moreover, the policy carries no last-updated date to check it against.
Who Is AdBlocker Ultimate Best For?
AdBlocker Ultimate suits your firm if you are one to five people and you run Chrome. Moreover, it fits when you want fewer bad ads without a new bill. Look elsewhere once you have staff to manage. Above ten laptops, for instance, you lose volume pricing and policy control. You also lose any way to prove a matching setup during a review.
There is a client angle here too. VerityLoft’s own benchmark finds that our readers “divide at 53% tech-advanced or proficient and 47% tech-limited or challenged.” Thus, many of you reading may find the custom rules to be overly cumbersome to implement like we did. Weigh the wider stack as well. The same paper reports firms run a mean of ten apps, with 48% in split setups. In other words, one more browser tool that can quietly change a page is not a free addition. For a different tool your staff touch daily, read our 1Password for Accountants review.
Is AdBlocker Ultimate Right for Your Firm? Final Verdict
Score: 4 out of 5.
AdBlocker Ultimate earns that on fit and on price. Tax portals, both auth handoffs, a bank dashboard with 2FA and a card form all behaved. That, above all, is the failure your firm should fear most. Still, it loses its point on control and scale. You cannot scope it off sensitive sites with Chrome’s own setting, and unblocking remains whole-domain only. Moreover, there is no rollout story above ten devices, while blocking strength stays unscored until we re-run it.
For a solo bookkeeper it is an easy yes. For a firm with staff and a compliance reviewer, however, treat it as a stopgap while the MV3 field settles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AdBlocker Ultimate break the CRA portal or other tax sites?
It broke nothing at all in our testing. CRA sign-in, the Sign-In Partner handoff, a statement view, eTaxBC and a tax portal all behaved. Still, this was one test day, so watch for changes after a portal update.
Can I stop AdBlocker Ultimate from running on my banking sites?
You cannot do it through Chrome’s site setting. Chrome’s docs confirm that MV3 block rules work without host rights, so blocking goes on anyway. Instead, disable it per site from the add-on menu.
Is AdBlocker Ultimate safe for a firm handling client data?
Nothing we saw suggests a data risk. Still, your file should note that the store page claims no data collection, while the vendor’s policy describes anonymous usage data. That telemetry can be switched off.
How do I deploy AdBlocker Ultimate across my whole team?
Chrome’s ExtensionInstallForcelist policy installs it and stops staff removing it. However, it covers install only, since AdAvoid ships no schema for settings. So you force the install, then set up each laptop by hand.
Does AdBlocker Ultimate slow down filter updates on Chrome?
Yes, and the vendor says so plainly. Because MV3 ships rules inside the add-on, its help centre cites a delay of one to five days. Therefore malvertising freshness is the real worry for your firm.
Should I use AdBlocker Ultimate instead of uBlock Origin?
On Chrome you no longer get that choice, since uBlock Origin does not run there now. Your real match-up is against other MV3 blockers. On Firefox, uBlock Origin still wins on capability.
